About the position

The Temporary General Laborer position at Ketchikan Public Utilities involves performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction duties under supervision. The role is designed to assist skilled tradespeople and ensure the upkeep of public utilities facilities, reflecting positively on the City of Ketchikan. This position requires physical labor and the operation of various tools and equipment in outdoor environments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, repair, and construction duties for assigned areas including roads, culverts, ditches, and drains.
  • Operate brusher to clear brush around penstocks, roadways, substations, and buildings.
  • Conduct general cleaning and maintenance duties for Ketchikan Public Utilities facilities, including painting.
  • Use power saws and/or a chipper to manage brush and trees for utility right-of-ways.
  • Load and unload materials at the landfill.
  • Clean ditches and clear hydro intakes of debris as necessary.
  • Remove snow from entryways and sidewalks as needed.
  • Operate a forklift to move waste oil drums within the oil containment area.
  • Assist in digging holes as directed.
  • Conduct traffic control and install street barricades and cones during maintenance activities.
  • Assist journeyman in non-trade specific duties.
  • Operate maintenance equipment and hand/power tools safely and efficiently.
  • Assist in special projects as required.
  • Provide customer service and respond to inquiries regarding maintenance projects.
  • Maintain cleanliness of assigned work areas and facilities.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions during all work performed.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of general maintenance, repair, and construction operations.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Experience in general maintenance, repair, and construction (1 year preferred).
  • Possession of a Class B driver's license.
  • Possession of a Flaggers certificate.
  • Ability to obtain a Forklift operator's certificate.
