About the position

The County of Riverside's University Health System - Behavioral Health is seeking temporary Insurance Billing Clerks for their Billing Department. The role involves verifying medical insurance coverage, preparing billing information for third-party intermediaries, and ensuring the accuracy of patient accounts. The position requires interaction with patients and insurance carriers to obtain necessary authorizations and verify coverage, making it essential for candidates to have knowledge of billing processes and experience in medical billing.

Responsibilities

  • Verify medical insurance coverage according to established procedures.
  • Access computerized account files to obtain or update information.
  • Prepare billing information for third-party intermediaries for services rendered or related charges.
  • Enter standard or coded data from forms or documents into computer terminals.
  • Review all patient accounts to ensure the accuracy of information and make necessary changes for correct billing.
  • Examine patient insurance forms and cards for completeness and accuracy.
  • Contact patients' medical insurance carriers to obtain authorization for treatment and verify eligibility and coverage.
  • Respond to patient inquiries regarding account status, patient liability, and general billing procedures.
  • Check and correct account or numerical records for arithmetical errors or proper coding.

Requirements

  • One year of experience performing financial, statistical, or fiscal record keeping work, including billing (medical billing experience preferred).
  • Two years of clerical experience, one of which involved making arithmetical computations or performing financial, statistical, or fiscal record keeping and billing work, preferably medical billing.
  • Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from a recognized college in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may substitute for one year of non-specialized experience.
  • Completion of 369 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial science, business education, or a closely related field may substitute for one year of non-specialized experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of billing processes for government, managed care, and commercial payers.
  • Familiarity with different types of claims forms.
  • Understanding of remittance advice & EOB.
  • Knowledge of Medicare & reimbursement methodologies.
  • Experience with FQHC or Clinical billing and collection practices.
  • Proficiency in Excel & EPIC.
