About the position
The Temporary Librarian for the North Carolina Collection at Durham County Library is responsible for providing professional library services within a part-time, temporary capacity. This role involves assisting patrons with research, managing special collections, and participating in promotional activities for the library's collections. The position is designed to support the library's mission while accommodating a flexible schedule, including weekend and holiday coverage.
Responsibilities
- Provide coverage for the North Carolina Collection, the special collections department of Durham County Library.
- Hold shifts at the NCC Information Desk and provide research assistance to customers both in-person and remotely through email, phone, and chat.
- Work on collection-based projects, including archival processing of manuscript collections, cataloging work with the bibliographic collection, management of digital collections, and digitization of materials.
- Participate in promotional activities for the collection, including creating digital and physical exhibits, holding instructional sessions with a wide variety of customers, and hosting library programs.
- Be available for a Saturday rotation and for holiday coverage.
Requirements
- Completion of an accredited master's program in library science from an ALA accredited library school.
- General knowledge of professional library and archival principles, procedures, materials, and practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Strong computer skills in a variety of tools, software, and platforms.
Nice-to-haves
- North Carolina local history knowledge preferred.
- Experience in archives or special collections.
