About the position

The Temporary Managing Director for KIND in Houston is responsible for the effective management of the local field office, overseeing program and performance management, budgeting, and employee relations. This role involves mentoring pro bono attorneys, providing legal representation, and engaging with various stakeholders to advance the mission of KIND, which focuses on the protection of unaccompanied and separated children. The Managing Director will also ensure compliance with grant requirements and manage the office budget while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mentoring to KIND pro bono attorneys and limited direct legal representation to KIND clients.
  • Serve as a member of KIND's Legal Programs management team, responsible for overall management of the field office.
  • Monitor and present changes in immigration law to various audiences.
  • Develop and implement effective management strategies to meet programmatic and funding deliverables.
  • Oversee the provision of mentoring programs and direct representation services to clients.
  • Ensure data integrity and utilize case management databases for efficient processes.
  • Promote volunteer support by developing relationships with law firms and corporate counsel.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with KIND's headquarters and maintain stakeholder relations.
  • Manage team or field office budget and track expenditures.
  • Assist with special projects of local and national scope.

Requirements

  • J.D. and admitted to state bar.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience practicing immigration law.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience supervising attorneys and non-attorney staff.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in program management.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with law firm attorneys and/or other legal volunteers.
  • Strong record of cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children or individuals in detained settings.
  • Experience working in a national or larger management structure.
