About the position

The University of Georgia is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant to join the Food Safety Center within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to research efforts in a dynamic academic environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining cell cultures, preparing buffers for various projects, and conducting limited experiments such as TCID50 assays, RNA extraction, and QPCR. The role requires a commitment to laboratory protocols and safety standards, as well as effective communication with team members and external vendors. The Temporary Research Assistant will work primarily in the Griffin area, with a flexible schedule of Monday through Friday, averaging 3-4 hours per day. The anticipated start date for this position is June 10, 2024. The role is essential for supporting ongoing research projects and ensuring that laboratory operations run smoothly. The assistant will also be tasked with ordering lab supplies, maintaining chemical and reagent inventories, and coordinating equipment repairs. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a research setting while contributing to important work in food safety and public health.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain cell culture for various cell lines and prepare cell culture plates.
  • Make buffers for various projects and perform limited experiments such as TCID50, RNA extraction, or QPCR.
  • Order lab supplies as needed.
  • Follow up with companies regarding equipment repairs.
  • Maintain chemical and reagent inventory and perform equipment maintenance.

Requirements

  • Experience with cell culture techniques.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology techniques such as RNA extraction and QPCR.
