As the leader of the health care team, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of care, policies, and procedures. This role is pivotal in demonstrating performance consistent with the Medical Center Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan of the organization. The RN is expected to remain flexible to changing systems and demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice. Treating co-workers, patients, families, and all members of the health care team with dignity and respect is paramount. The Registered Nurse demonstrates proficiency through various skills, competencies, and behaviors. This includes upholding Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, serving as a leader of the health care team, delegating tasks appropriately, and demonstrating accountability. The RN understands their own and team members' scope of practice and escalates issues as appropriate. They are expected to demonstrate professional, supportive behavior, champion new ideas, and lead others through the change process. Effective communication strategies, including chain of command and issue escalation, are essential to achieve intended outcomes. In addition to leadership responsibilities, the RN develops and contributes to individualized plans of care that reflect assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes. This includes ensuring multidisciplinary planning, consultation, and education, as well as monitoring patient progress and revising plans based on ongoing evaluations. The RN ensures that care meets standards of practice and that discharge plans are effectively developed and communicated to patients and families. The RN is also responsible for providing an optimal patient care experience by actively listening to the needs of patients and family members, promptly responding to requests, and maintaining patient confidentiality. They are viewed as effective team members who are flexible, cooperative, and willing to assist others, while also taking accountability for their actions and accepting constructive criticism. The RN participates in mandatory meetings and contributes to the assessment of unit learning needs and the development of an annual education plan. Fiscal responsibility is also a key aspect of the role, as the RN organizes work to minimize overtime and assists in systems improvement.
