About the position

Reed College is seeking a temporary Studio Art Technician to join our team. This part-time position is designed for individuals who are passionate about art and education, specifically in ceramics. The technician will play a crucial role in training and leading students in the use of various ceramic equipment, including 10 electric potter's wheels, 4 electric kilns, a clay mixer, slab rollers, extruders, and spray equipment, as well as miscellaneous power tools. The technician will report directly to the Studio Art Operations Manager and will be responsible for ensuring that all equipment is maintained in good working order and that the studio environment is clean and conducive to learning. The anticipated start date for this position is September 5, 2024, with an end date of October 4, 2024. The hours for this role will vary and will be discussed during the interview process. The pay for this position ranges from $24 to $25 per hour, depending on experience and determined through an internal pay equity assessment. This position is eligible for overtime and falls under Grade 5. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ceramics, including knowledge of bisques and glaze firing, and will be able to move heavy equipment and supplies throughout the workday. This role is perfect for someone who is interested in a temporary part-time position and is eager to share their expertise with students in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Train students to throw pottery using potter wheels.
  • Distribute clay and clay tools as needed.
  • Fire kilns for student projects.
  • Assist in demonstration of hand building, casting, and molding clay.
  • Train students to use glazes, mix, and maintain glazes.
  • Keep the studio and all equipment in working order.
  • Clean the ceramic studio at the end of the day.
  • Assist in hanging artwork in the gallery, halls, and classrooms as needed.
  • Assist with building maintenance as needed.
  • Assist with setup, maintenance, or in-class demos as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Fine Arts and at least two years of experience instructing students in a ceramic and glass studio using computer-aided design tools.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the desired skills and ability to perform the work.
