About the position

Pine Bluff Materials in Ledbetter, KY is currently recruiting a tenderboat deckhand. The deckhand will report to Ledbetter, KY and will be responsible for working on a tenderboat. The position requires effective communication and collaboration with the tenderboat crew across all shifts, as well as with line haul boat crews. An experienced deckhand must have a safe work history and be adept at recognizing and communicating hazards and hazardous conditions. Additionally, the deckhand should possess a solid understanding of river conditions and changes, and have the ability to evaluate marine rigging and identify rigging hazards. The role involves performing general labor onboard a tow boat that navigates the inland waterway system, which includes housekeeping on the boat and barges, handling lines and cables to connect or disconnect barges, chipping and painting, and carrying out maintenance and support functions for the tow boat and barges. This position is intended to be a dinner bucket position on a 12-hour shift, with duties rotating between days, nights, and time off. Compensation will be at a daily rate, commensurate with experience, and a competitive benefits package is available, including employer participation in health, dental, and life insurance, as well as a 401K plan after a waiting period.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate and work well with tenderboat crew and line haul boat crews.

  • Perform general labor onboard a tow boat, including housekeeping on the boat and barges.
  • Handle lines and cables to connect or disconnect barges.
  • Chipping and painting as well as maintenance and support functions for the tow boat and barges.

Requirements

  • Deckhand experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability and desire to work 12-hour shifts.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting items weighing at least 75 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs and perform repetitive bending and stooping.
  • Must possess the ability to swim and be comfortable working over or adjacent to water.
  • Must have the ability and desire to work during inclement conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with all applicable entities involved in the process.
  • Dependable and consistent in reporting as scheduled.
