About the position

The Department of Architecture within the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) at the University of Hartford seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor with the responsibility to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Structures and Architectural Design or Sustainable Technology. Candidates should have knowledge and expertise in the field of structures, innovative structural design, integrated building systems, and sustainable construction, materials, and building. Candidates should show a willingness and ability to employ state-of-the-art simulation software and technology in teaching structural design courses. Teaching load is 18 credits per academic year. Successful candidates for this position will teach one or more sections of ADT 355 Strength of Materials, ADT 474 Design of Steel and Wood Structures, ADT 484 Design of Reinforced Structures, and ARC 523 Advanced Structural Systems. Opportunity exists to teach a graduate-level design studio, dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. All faculty are expected to remain active in creative/scholarly pursuits and seek opportunities for professional development and/or peer-reviewed publications. Significant opportunities exist for research collaboration with faculty members within the Department of Architecture, CETA, and across the University, as well as industrial partners. The University, College (CETA), and Department of Architecture are committed to nurturing the career development of faculty. The recently completed state-of-the-art Hursey Center provides research support for architecture, engineering and technology scholarship, including focused labs for high-bay structural engineering, concrete, surveying, and 3D printing, as well as maker spaces. All faculty are expected to contribute and participate in department and school committees, advise students, and contribute to student recruitment and retention. Furthermore, all faculty should have the capacity to support and enhance diverse learning and/or working environments.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Structures and Architectural Design or Sustainable Technology.
  • Employ state-of-the-art simulation software and technology in teaching structural design courses.
  • Teach one or more sections of ADT 355 Strength of Materials, ADT 474 Design of Steel and Wood Structures, ADT 484 Design of Reinforced Structures, and ARC 523 Advanced Structural Systems.
  • Opportunity to teach a graduate-level design studio, dependent on qualifications and experience.
  • Remain active in creative/scholarly pursuits and seek opportunities for professional development and/or peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in architecture (M.Arch.) OR a professional degree in architecture (B.Arch.) or comparable professional degree and a graduate degree in architecture, structural engineering, civil engineering, or another allied field (M.S., M.A., or other related graduate degree).
  • Teaching experience in Structures, Engineering, or Construction Technology courses at the college level.
  • Practical experience in at least one of the following: innovative building construction, sustainable design, or construction technology.
  • Demonstrates a promising scholarly focus and trajectory.
  • Exhibits excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience or interest in teaching courses in Social Justice or Underserved Populations Issues in Architecture.
  • Experience or interest in working with students from BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ populations.
  • Research, scholarship, or professional projects demonstrate a commitment to social justice, equity and/or diversity issues.
  • Professional registration (RA, NCARB, PE, CACB) with evidence of innovation in practice.
  • Experience in teaching architecture or an allied field.
  • Advanced academic qualifications: PhD in architecture or an allied discipline, ABD, or a path to a PhD degree in architecture or related field.
  • Experience in small-or-large scale testing or advanced analysis of structures.
  • Expertise in innovative building materials and/or construction systems, such as mass timber, 3D volumetric construction, hybrid concrete construction, or similar.
  • Advanced expertise in sustainable design practices, including net-zero designs, life-cycle assessments, or re-use and re-cycling approaches.
  • Expertise in innovative construction technology, such as building information modeling (BIM), computational design, building performance analysis, augmented reality-assisted building, artificial intelligence, or similar.
  • Leadership or administrative experience, with the ability to guide curriculum development or revision.
  • Academic or professional experience needed to be effective at both the undergraduate and graduate level, with specific knowledge related to NAAB requirements and integrated design.
