About the position

Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection is seeking a Territory Sales Manager for portable gas detection, specifically targeting the natural gas utility market in the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States. This position is home office based and will involve significant interaction with end users in the gas utility industry. The successful candidate will be responsible for the profitable promotion and growth of the portable gas detection portfolio, which includes both portable and fixed-point detectors, as well as controllers. Teledyne has established a strong reputation for quality and reliability in the industry, and the appointed candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing this reputation by ensuring that customers receive the best possible solutions to meet their needs. The Territory Sales Manager will work closely with the Teledyne Gas & Flame sales team, product management, and engineering teams to develop a comprehensive understanding of the product offerings. This knowledge will be essential for effectively promoting the products to both new and existing customers. The role will require the candidate to manage the entire sales process, from identifying sales opportunities to preparing quotes and managing the tender process. Building strong relationships with end users and industry associations will be key to achieving sales targets and driving business growth in the region. In addition to direct sales responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct customer training and seminars, attend sales meetings and exhibitions, and provide regular reports on market and competitor activities. The role demands a proactive approach to understanding customer needs and adapting sales strategies accordingly, ensuring that Teledyne remains a leader in the gas detection market.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of the portable gas detection product portfolio through successful completion of required sales and technical training programs.
  • Achieve agreed sales targets for the region by identifying sales opportunities in new and existing markets.
  • Build strong business relationships with end users and industry associations in the gas utility market.
  • Manage the tender process, including providing quotes and relevant documents.
  • Identify key end user accounts in the territory and implement a sales plan to support direct selling.
  • Meet regularly with existing and prospective customers to understand their evolving business needs.
  • Prepare customer-specific business plans.
  • Attend sales meetings and exhibitions in AMER and internationally as part of the sales team.
  • Conduct sales presentations, customer training, and seminars.
  • Utilize CRM, ERP, and other IT tools for customer information, forecasts, and reports.
  • Work effectively with internal departments: Marketing, Inside Sales & Customer Service, Field Service, Product Management, and Application Engineering.
  • Attend conferences and professional association meetings to promote product solutions and brands.
  • Monitor and report on market and competitor activities on a weekly basis.

Requirements

  • Detailed knowledge of portable gas detection products and applications in the gas utility industry in the AMER region.
  • Experience managing the full tender process in the public sector/gas utility industry in the AMER region.
  • Knowledge of competitive products and industry trends.
  • Basic knowledge to provide first level of service support to customers.
  • Professional field sales record with a proven track record (5+ years).
  • Proven ability to train and teach internal and external customers.
  • Effective communication skills at all levels, both externally and internally.
  • Ability to create and maintain effective customer networks.
  • Effectiveness in business development and lead qualification.
  • Degree Level qualification in sales/engineering/business or associated subject.
  • Objective driven with a desire to succeed.
  • Dynamic, enthusiastic problem solver.
  • Effective team player with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
