About the position

The Laboratory Chemist position at Avon Protection is integral to the APS Filters Laboratory, which focuses on testing related to Avon’s respiratory protection products. This role encompasses supporting the production of filters and engaging in research and development for innovative respiratory protection solutions. The Laboratory Chemist will be responsible for conducting advanced measurements of toxic gases and simulants, utilizing their expertise in chemistry and chemical analytical methods to ensure the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of laboratory testing processes. In this role, the Laboratory Chemist will perform gas protection time testing on filters and sorbent materials, which is crucial for both production and research and development efforts. Calibration activities for various instruments, including gas chromatography (GC), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, chemiluminescence, electrochemical sensors, and mass flow units, will also be part of their responsibilities. The chemist will prepare chemicals and agents for testing, ensuring proper neutralization of reagents and waste, and will conduct analytical measurements on materials using techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The position requires working with various toxic chemicals and gases, solvents, acids, and bases, adhering to Safety Datasheet requirements for safe handling. The Laboratory Chemist will make recommendations regarding gas detectors and other instruments based on analytical techniques and chemistry. They will also participate in the use of Statistical Process Control charts, performing control measurements and identifying any out-of-control conditions. Collaboration with scientific staff and the Laboratory Systems Engineer is essential for creating and updating procedures related to testing, inventory, and safety. The chemist will communicate findings through professional verbal and written reports, including charts and graphs, to effectively convey test data. Understanding military and commercial filter specifications, including test conditions and quality limits, is crucial for this role. The chemist will investigate the chemical compatibility of materials and instrument components, supporting both production and research teams with their knowledge of chemical reactions and interactions. Additionally, the Laboratory Chemist will learn and apply all relevant laboratory quality control procedures and policies, perform routine laboratory tasks such as housekeeping and washing glassware, and conduct physical tests like dust emission and particle size distribution. They will also support quality, production, and engineering teams with non-routine testing and assist in generating work orders and test plans. Active participation in lab SQUID (Safety, Quality, Utilization, Inventory, and Delivery) meetings is expected, along with database entry of test results and other assigned duties.
