About the position

The Test Range Planning Engineer at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is responsible for analyzing complex missile flight test scenarios, particularly in the field of hypersonics. This role involves planning tests for strategic missile and reentry systems, conducting link margin analysis, and utilizing missile analysis tools. The engineer will also provide onsite support during test events and collaborate with cross-discipline teams to address engineering challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts for advanced range and mobile systems to support emerging hypersonic vehicle test programs
  • Lead and contribute to analysis efforts of upcoming missions
  • Participate in missile test and evaluation activities including test operations and pre/post flight evaluations
  • Produce reports and presentations to communicate results to team members and government partners
  • Support development of link margin analysis tools
  • Collaborate with cross-discipline teams to advise government and contractor partners on engineering challenges and design trades

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical/RF Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in missile system engineering disciplines such as antenna analysis and test, missile test and evaluation, or formal systems engineering concepts
  • Strong computer background with proficiency in Python and MATLAB programming
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals of different experience levels and backgrounds
  • Willingness to travel to attend meetings and tests at other government and contractor sites (approximately six trips per year)
  • Comfortable working in closed area facilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance and ultimately a Top Secret level security clearance

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. in Electrical/RF Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Ability to support field operations aboard surface ships, including field site test support and at-sea deployments
  • Currently have an active Secret or Top Secret Clearance
