About the position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Ambulatory Division at UCSF Health is a pivotal leadership role responsible for driving operational and performance success within the Ambulatory Division of UCSF Health's Network Business Unit. This position entails the execution and delivery of results aligned with the network's strategic initiatives, necessitating close collaboration with network leadership. The COO will be instrumental in building and inspiring teams across existing and new ambulatory operations, ensuring that they meet the network's established goals related to clinical excellence, financial sustainability, and growth. A key aspect of this role is fostering engagement with patients, families, physicians, and staff, thereby enhancing the overall patient experience and operational effectiveness. In addition to operational oversight, the COO will cultivate strong partnerships with community groups, physician leadership, and key stakeholders both locally and across the broader healthcare system. This leader will be expected to adapt to evolving circumstances, stepping into other leadership roles as necessary to support the organization's mission and objectives. The role requires a strategic mindset, with a focus on implementing UCSF Health's vision for high-quality, equitable, and affordable care throughout the Bay Area. Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to achieve operational and performance success for the Ambulatory Division.
  • Execute and communicate the network's strategic initiatives in collaboration with network leadership.
  • Build and inspire teams at existing and new ambulatory operations to deliver on network-established goals.
  • Engage with patients, families, physicians, and staff to enhance operational effectiveness and patient experience.
  • Cultivate strong partnerships with community groups, physician leadership, and key stakeholders.
  • Oversee operational and clinical integration across UCSF Health and affiliated community operations.
  • Manage joint ventures and affiliate partnership models effectively.
  • Lead the opening of new services, including pre-opening construction management and regulatory oversight.
  • Establish and utilize metrics to drive excellence and support operations.
  • Manage capital and operating budget development and financial analysis.

Requirements

  • Extensive executive management experience in a complex health care organization.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, and financial management.
  • Experience with managing joint venture or affiliate partnership models.
  • Experience with opening new services, including construction management and regulatory approval.
  • Highly advanced ability to work collaboratively with medical center executives and external agencies.
  • Expert ability to establish metrics to drive excellence and facilitate integration.
  • Expert knowledge of budget development, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with advanced interpersonal skills.
  • Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to organizational goals.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration, or a clinical degree.
