About the position

The Education Instructor at the ReBuilding Center is responsible for facilitating safe and inspirational classes in carpentry and DIY skills. This role involves teaching adults and youth, preparing class materials, and ensuring a clean and well-maintained education environment. The instructor will work collaboratively with other staff to enhance programming and support the mission of making reuse and repair accessible to all.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver hands-on instruction of curriculum to adults & youth in 2-3 classes per week, each with a maximum of 14 participants.
  • Engage students in design challenges & on-the-fly problem-solving with patience and a focus on positive learning & skill development.
  • Prepare materials for classes.
  • Teach a suite of classes with an evolving curriculum, including basic carpentry and plumbing essentials.
  • Train & coach fellow and new instructors in class flow, safety, setup, & best practices.
  • Conduct one-on-one carpentry, home maintenance, and repair consultations.
  • Collaborate with other Education staff to identify and implement improvements to the shop, programming, and departmental processes.
  • Communicate with team members regarding practices needed for a safe and effective classroom experience.
  • Keep current on evolving shop procedures and resources.

Requirements

  • Strong verbal communication skills and public speaking capabilities.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of personal or professional experience in hands-on carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or home repair & improvement.
  • Experience and passion for teaching or comparable role providing instruction or training.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with communication & resolving conflict.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving marginalized populations, including women, BIPOC, & LGBTQ communities.
  • Ability to lift up to 50+ lbs. safely using ergonomically correct lifting methods.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable 3-year driving history.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with used and/or reclaimed building and remodeling materials.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
  • Current 1st Aid/CPR certification.
