About the position

The Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist - Medical Dosimetrist is responsible for producing treatment planning dosimetry calculations for external beam radiation therapy, including IMRT, using computerized systems. This role involves consulting with radiation oncologists, participating in brachytherapy and total body irradiation procedures, and ensuring the safety and effectiveness of radiation treatments for patients.

Responsibilities

  • Enter irregular fields, patient contours, and other vital beam data into a treatment planning computer accurately.
  • Compute radiation dose to individual ports, tumors, and other necessary body structures to ensure quality treatment and safety.
  • Submit plan choices to the physician for determining the best treatment method for specific patient tumors.
  • Prepare treatment charts prior to the first treatment, indicating vital factors necessary for correct patient treatment.
  • Diagram patient set-up to assure treatment method is easily understood by therapists administering treatments.
  • Perform weekly chart checks of patient dose and chart radiation therapy review in the absence of the Physicist.
  • Assist CT scan technologists and ensure CT scans are delivered promptly to dosimetry for image formatting.
  • Work collaboratively with the radiation therapy team to accomplish departmental goals effectively.
  • Stay current with new developments in radiation therapy and utilize new technologies for patient treatment.
  • Adhere to safety and health standards, regulations, and use proper protective equipment as required.
  • Assist oncologist in brachytherapy procedures and maintain sterile techniques.
  • Design treatment plans considering dose-limiting structures and execute planning for brachytherapy procedures.
  • Supervise or assist in producing molds, casts, and other immobilization devices for accurate treatment delivery.
  • Use imaging modalities to create treatment plans that deliver higher doses to tumors while protecting sensitive structures.
  • Perform calculations for accurate delivery of prescribed doses and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
  • Provide technical and physics support to the Medical Physicist and assist in clinical education of students and residents.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree and graduate from an accredited medical dosimetry program of at least 12 months in duration.
  • Certified in medical dosimetry by the MDCB.
  • Possess ARRT(T) certification if performing therapeutic radiologic technologist duties.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with radiation safety and current rules and regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance procedures in radiation oncology.
