About the position

The Thermal Management & Solutions Engineer II at Medtronic will play a crucial role in the development and testing of innovative products within the Neuromodulation sector, focusing on interventional pain therapies. This position involves utilizing computational modeling and simulation to enhance device performance, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and contributing to the design and evaluation of medical devices aimed at treating musculoskeletal diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize computational modeling & simulation to develop new test methods; integrate materials and processes; characterize device performance
  • Analyze computational modeling & simulation results, distill key findings, and translate into conclusions
  • Work collaboratively with front-end R&D, product development teams and cross-functional team members to bring new products to market
  • Support the maintenance of commercially released products on an as needed basis
  • Develop & utilize structural finite-element modeling tools for design and evaluation of devices
  • Implement general mechanical design and solid/fluid mechanics fundamentals to drive product development for treatment of musculoskeletal diseases
  • Prepare reports and presentations to communicate technical assessments and analysis results
  • Actively contribute to design reviews and technical reviews with cross-functional partners
  • Manage project assignments and collaborate with other stakeholders to achieve desired results
  • Generate technical reports for submission to regulatory agencies
  • Effectively communicate and present technical concepts cross-functionally
  • Coach and guide junior engineers or technicians working on the projects

Requirements

  • Bachelors in engineering with minimum of two years of relevant experience or advanced degree with zero
  • Master's or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline with a research focus on modeling biological systems
  • Advanced knowledge of heat and mass transfer with heat propagation in biological tissue preferred, basic electrical engineering principles, and interaction between electrical currents and biological tissue
  • Solid knowledge of anatomy with focus on central nervous system/spinal cord
  • Foundation in applied mathematics and lumped modelling approach of transient problems
  • Basic knowledge of lumped modeling for energy-based systems such as block and cylindrical modeling
  • Ability to solve basic heat transfer equations and knowledge of convection/conduction properties of materials (fluids and solids)
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of ANSYS CFD tools (AEDT, ICEPAK, FLUENT)
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of thermal management solutions such as heat sink, heat pipes, spreaders, liquid cooling basics
  • Thermal testing and data acquisition using basic DAQ boards, fixturing, data collection in both steady state and transient
  • Dynamic team player who can work effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams

Nice-to-haves

  • History working in regulated industries such as medical device or ability to quickly embrace and learn and follow policies and procedures that comply with regulations and standards from regulatory bodies
  • Computer simulation of advanced biomaterial interaction with tissue preferably ANSYS simulation package
  • Advanced knowledge of CFD/Heat Transfer and Multiphysics
  • Ability to conduct virtual DOE and physical DOEs (reduced order models, transfer functions) - virtual twin modeling and running physical DOEs (evaluation of main effects, interactions, bias, experimental error)
  • Thermocouple attach and calibration, evaluating and compensation of TVC bias/sensitivity analysis
  • Basic knowledge of RF and Microwave heating devices such as probes and their interaction with biological tissues
