About the position

The Underwriter position is a remote role that operates under the general direction of the Title Production Manager. The primary responsibility of the Underwriter is to communicate with settlement offices to coordinate the preparation of title insurance commitments and policies for various jurisdictions including Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. This role requires regular, predictable, and dependable attendance, which is essential for satisfactory performance. The Underwriter will be responsible for reviewing title work and surveys, preparing title insurance commitments with minimal oversight, and resolving underwriting problems by contacting the title insurance underwriter's counsel. Additionally, the Underwriter will obtain necessary approvals for large or abnormal policies, prepare invoices for insurance premiums, and provide endorsements or additional documentation to settlement offices as needed. The position also involves preparing title insurance policies and mailing completed documents to lenders and owners, as well as answering phone inquiries and monitoring files using computer software. The Underwriter is expected to meet performance and behavior expectations as outlined by management, maintain positive work relationships, and demonstrate the necessary competencies to effectively complete job responsibilities. Personal initiative for technical and professional development is encouraged, along with adherence to company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Review title work and surveys and prepare title insurance commitments with minimal review by team leader or senior underwriter.
  • Contact title insurance underwriter's counsel to resolve underwriting problems.
  • Obtain approvals from title insurance underwriter's counsel for large or abnormal policies.
  • Prepare invoices showing premiums for insurance and forward commitments and invoices to appropriate settlement offices.
  • Provide endorsements and/or additional documentation to settlement offices upon request.
  • Prepare title insurance policies and mail completed policies to lender and owner.
  • Answer phones and provide informed responses to callers.
  • Monitor files on computer software.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalency.
  • At least two years of experience in title insurance.
  • Title insurance license in jurisdiction where office is located.
  • Proficiency with business software and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Detail-oriented with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of word processing.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work as a member in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and handle multiple tasks under deadline pressure.
  • High degree of integrity, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and possess a good aptitude for figures.

Nice-to-haves
