About the position

The Deputy Sheriff Officer for Tobacco Enforcement is a field-based role primarily focused on conducting investigations related to Arizona's tobacco tax laws. This position involves civil inspections, criminal investigations, and enforcing compliance with tobacco regulations. The officer will engage in various activities such as conducting interviews, collecting evidence, and educating retailers and the public about tobacco tax responsibilities. The role also includes the authority to conduct surveillance, execute search warrants, and make arrests, with a significant portion of the work performed in the field throughout Arizona.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct civil inspections and criminal investigations related to Arizona tobacco tax statutes.
  • Perform interviews and collect evidence for investigations.
  • Write detailed reports on findings and enforcement actions.
  • Educate retailers and the public on compliance with tobacco tax laws.
  • Conduct inspections of tobacco products at retailers and distributors.
  • Execute search warrants and make arrests as necessary.
  • Testify at Grand Jury and attend court proceedings when required.

Requirements

  • Valid, unrestricted Arizona State Driver's License.
  • Current Arizona Peace Officer (AZPOST) Certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience conducting complex criminal investigations.
  • Associate's Degree or relevant degree from an accredited college or university.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 3 years experience as a Post-Certified Peace Officer.
  • A college degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or related field.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement/LEAN methodologies.
  • Experience in gang and/or narcotics investigations.
