About the position

The Tobacco Enforcement Officer is a field-based role within the Arizona Department of Revenue, primarily focused on enforcing tobacco tax compliance across the state. This position involves conducting civil inspections and criminal investigations related to Arizona luxury tax statutes, collecting evidence, and educating retailers and the public about compliance responsibilities. The officer has the authority to conduct surveillance, execute search warrants, make arrests, and testify in court as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct civil inspections and criminal investigations related to Arizona luxury tax statutes.
  • Collect and preserve evidence, write reports, and enforce tobacco tax compliance.
  • Inspect retailers and distributors for compliance with tobacco product regulations.
  • Educate retailers and the public on Arizona tobacco tax laws and compliance responsibilities.
  • Conduct surveillance and execute search warrants as necessary.
  • Make arrests and issue citations for misdemeanor violations.
  • Testify at the Grand Jury and attend court proceedings when required.

Requirements

  • Valid, unrestricted Arizona State Driver's License.
  • Current Arizona Peace Officer (AZPOST) Certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience conducting complex criminal investigations.
  • Associate's Degree or relevant degree from an accredited college or university.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least 3 years experience as a Post-Certified Peace Officer.
  • A college degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or related field.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement/LEAN.
  • Experience in gang and/or narcotics investigations.
