About the position

The Tooling Engineer position is a senior-level role focused on the design and development of precision tooling for consumable plastic components in consumer packaging manufacturing. The successful candidate will serve as the technical lead, utilizing their expertise in mechanical design, thermoplastic materials, and injection molding tooling to create efficient manufacturing solutions. This role involves investigating existing technologies, developing tooling specifications, and ensuring the implementation of best practices in tooling processes.

Responsibilities

  • Act as liaison between the company and tooling vendors.
  • Develop a proactive tooling maintenance program.
  • Supervise, schedule, and coordinate mold technician activities, including setting up injection molding machines, diagnosing mold-related problems, and scheduling preventive maintenance activities.
  • Supervise, train, schedule, and coordinate in-house tool room activities to support manufacturing across all departments.
  • Monitor mold component inventory to ensure 100% cavitation on production runs and replenish inventory as needed.
  • Monitor mold function and service records, implementing modifications for continuous improvement.
  • Project management of new and existing mold/product projects, including specifying and soliciting quotations and providing input on moldability and tool requirements.
  • Monitor assigned budget for department activities.
  • Supervise CAD/Tool technician activities to revise and update mold drawings and component inspections.

Requirements

  • Completed tool and die or mold maker apprenticeship or equivalent work history with technical studies.
  • Minimum five years experience in injection mold, mold start up, debugging, and repair processes, preferably with high cavitation, hot runner systems, and tight tolerances in the pharmaceutical/food industry.
  • Minimum five years supervisory experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Functional knowledge of production and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to interface with Engineering and outside vendors to build new molds and troubleshoot existing tooling.
  • Strong computer skills with Excel, Word, etc.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints to components.
  • Capable of working extended work weeks or weekends.
  • Willingness to travel on company business.
