About the position

At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), we are dedicated to exploring, innovating, and designing novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Tooling/Process Engineer to join our research team. This role is pivotal in leading the design, development, and production of new molding tools and parts for low to moderate volume prototypes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in material selection, process optimization, and tool design specifically for overmolding of electronics. You will collaborate with a team of researchers and engineers who are at the forefront of developing state-of-the-art wearable devices, focusing on part design and material development. As a Tooling/Process Engineer, you will provide critical design feedback and materials recommendations to mechanical engineers, enhancing the manufacturing feasibility of thermoplastic, thermoset, and metal parts. You will be responsible for cultivating and managing relationships with tooling and molding suppliers, ensuring the successful design, manufacturing, and qualification of tooling and molded parts. This role may require travel as needed to facilitate successful tool launches. You will work closely with a cross-functional team to select materials that meet performance, schedule, dimensional, and cosmetic requirements. Additionally, you will lead the design, development, and production of new silicone/plastic injection mold tooling, including conducting optimization trials and Design of Experiments (DOEs) to meet stringent part and assembled device requirements. Collaboration with other tooling/process engineers will be essential to share expertise and leverage industry advancements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design for molding feedback and materials recommendations to mechanical engineers to improve the manufacturing feasibility of thermoplastic, thermoset, and metal parts
  • Cultivate and manage tooling and molding suppliers in the design, manufacturing and qualification of tooling and molded parts
  • Travel as needed to ensure successful tool launch
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team in the selection of materials to meet performance, schedule, dimensional and cosmetic requirements
  • Lead the design, development, and production of new silicone/plastic injection mold tooling (including optimization trials and DOEs) to meet strict part and assembled device requirements
  • Liaison with other tooling/process engineers to share expertise and take advantage of industry advancements

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Material Science, Manufacturing Engineering or a relevant technical field
  • 5+ years experience with a wide range of molding techniques including multiple of the following: insert molding, 2 shot molding, die casting, transfer molding, liquid silicone molding, and thermoforming
  • Experience managing working relationships with international and domestic suppliers to design and build tooling for high volume, tight tolerance consumer electronics products or similar
  • Experience guiding teams and suppliers through understanding and use of Molding simulations (Moldflow, etc.), SPC, DOE, and GD&T
  • Experience advising designs with a variety of elastomeric thermoplastic (TPU, TPE) and thermoset (silicone, NBR) resins

Nice-to-haves

  • Multishot molding and insert/overmolding of electronic components
  • Experience identifying disruptive technologies in all phases of tool design, tool manufacturing and part creation, and implementing them into production environments
  • Experience with post molding operations including but not limited to: deflashing, coating, painting, pad printing, laser engraving, adhesive application
  • Knowledge in metal part fabrication methods (die-casting, stamping, forging)
  • Experience with tooling quoting, price negotiations, and cost breakdowns

Benefits

  • Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer
  • Reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities in the recruiting process
