About the position

General Dynamics Land Systems is a global leader in the design, development, production, support, and sustainment of tracked and wheeled military equipment, specifically the Abrams Main Battle Tank and the Stryker Family of Wheeled Combat Vehicles. The Toolmaker position is essential in this process, as it involves the creation of precision tools used in manufacturing. As a Toolmaker, you will be responsible for reading and interpreting engineering drawings, securing raw materials, and cutting tools to the appropriate shape and size using various equipment such as mill machines, jig grinders, and lathes. This role requires a high level of skill and attention to detail, as the tools produced are critical for the manufacturing of military equipment. In this position, you will set up and operate CNC Horizontal Machining and Vertical Centers, as well as CNC Horizontal and Vertical Lathes. You will also be tasked with operating CNC Mill Turn machining centers and effectively using the aforementioned equipment to manufacture prototype products, often without finished detailed drawings, but with the assistance of a Manufacturing Engineer. A significant part of your responsibilities will include proving out new CNC programs on CNC equipment, identifying errors in programs, setups, feeds, and speeds, and troubleshooting issues with machining processes. You will also be responsible for building tooling, loading and unloading tool magazines, and setting up and mounting work holding fixtures. The role requires the ability to read and interpret detailed drawings, check the position of fixtures with indicators, and measure tooling with pre-setters. Additionally, you will be expected to train inexperienced machine operators and effectively use all machine shop measuring tools. The position also involves operating conventional Bridgeport milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders to tight tolerances, as well as manufacturing work holding devices, custom gauges, and repairing machine components for maintenance. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
