About the position

The Romanian Toponymist (Geospatial Linguist) - Level 2 position at Wiser involves analyzing and providing conflated information related to geographic names, ensuring accuracy and reliability for federal and international users. The role requires collaboration with geographic names experts and the use of various geospatial tools and methodologies to enhance geographic accuracy. Candidates will engage in research, data entry, and the application of policies governing geographic names, contributing to the production of geospatial products.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and provide conflated information associated with Foundation feature data listed within the Geographic Names Database (GNDB) and other data repositories.
  • Respond to questions concerning the proper application of names and various romanization systems using BGN and customer guidance.
  • Accurately enter and maintain data to update the GNDB, ensuring the reliability of geographic names for federal and international users.
  • Research, order, scan, and geo-reference hydrographic and topographic sources to enhance geographic accuracy.
  • Interpret and apply policies governing the treatment of names from organizations like BGN and NATO.
  • Utilize ArcGIS Pro and QGIS software for research and data creation, including shapefiles and geo-databases.
  • Recommend native maps or data for acquisition to enhance production sources.

Requirements

  • Proficient in reading Romanian at ILR level 2/2 or higher, with a recent test within the last 2 years.
  • US Citizenship required with the ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS software, specifically ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.
  • Basic understanding of Geographic Names collection methodologies.
  • Experience producing GEOINT products.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in research and information gathering.
  • Knowledge of GEOINT sources and experience with various types of maps and imagery.
  • Experience creating shapefiles and geo-databases, including data retrieval and storage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

  • Proficiency in Python scripting.
  • Regional geographic proficiency in the analyst's area of responsibility.
