About the position

The Special Education Assistant (Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program) position at TOPS K-8 is a long-term substitute role designed to support students with special needs in a classroom setting. This position is particularly focused on assisting students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and candidates with fluency in American Sign Language are preferred. The role involves working closely with teachers to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and to adapt classroom activities to meet the diverse needs of students. The assistant will be responsible for monitoring student behavior, providing personal care assistance, and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment during various school activities. In this role, the Special Education Assistant will adapt classroom materials and activities under the direction of the teacher, administer tests and assignments, and assist in evaluating student progress. The assistant will also provide first aid and medical assistance as needed, support students with personal care due to medical conditions, and attend meetings to acquire necessary information related to job functions. Regular communication with teachers and parents is essential to provide updates on student progress and to implement behavioral plans for students with specific needs. The position requires a flexible approach to working with a diverse group of students and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. The assistant will instruct students in various activities, including academic subjects and daily living skills, to reinforce learning objectives and support their success in school. The role also involves maintaining instructional materials and student records, monitoring students in different school environments, and performing other related duties as assigned to ensure the effective functioning of the educational unit.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the classroom.
  • Adapt classroom activities and materials under the direction of the teacher.
  • Administer tests, homework, and evaluate students' progress.
  • Provide first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Support students with personal care needs due to medical conditions.
  • Attend meetings and in-service presentations for job-related information.
  • Communicate regularly with teachers and parents regarding student progress.
  • Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills.
  • Maintain instructional materials and student records.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License or equivalent mobility.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Basic math skills, including calculations using fractions and percentages.
  • Experience working with children preferred, but not required.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and communicate with diverse groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with children in a classroom setting.
  • Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution and child development stages.

Benefits

  • Full-time position with a salary range of $43,852.06 - $59,639.37 per year.
