About the position

The Tour Guide Manager at Deadwood History is responsible for overseeing a team of tour guides, ensuring high-quality visitor experiences, and managing operational aspects of the tours. This role requires strong leadership skills, a passion for history, and the ability to engage with diverse visitors while maintaining the integrity of the historical narrative.

Responsibilities

  • Participate with the Communication Director and Human Resource Director to interview and hire tour guides for the Adams House and The Brothel Deadwood.
  • Train/Coach employees to recite the scripts and ensure they know additional background information about the subject matter.
  • Create and manage work schedule for tour guides to ensure appropriate coverage, prepared to cover any scheduling deficiencies.
  • Ensure a high level of service and visitor satisfaction through oversight of all aspects of the visitor experience including customer service, visitor safety, and museum information.
  • Observe the physical appearance and maintenance of the properties and report deficiencies to the Curator of Collections, copying the Communication Director on the communication.
  • Ensure that Adams House gift shop inventory and The Brothel Deadwood gift shop inventory is stocked on display shelves and oversee cleanliness.
  • Train/Coach employees on how to confidently interact and engage with visitors, promote gift shop sales, and cross-promote all DHI properties.
  • Use appropriate disciplinary action when necessary with the guidance of the Human Resource Director and Communication Director.
  • Assist with school, group, and motorcoach tours, as needed at the Historic Adams House and The Brothel Deadwood.
  • Coordinate and supervise weekly cleaning of the two properties with the Curator of Collections holding tour guides accountable.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of experience supervising and managing a team of at least five to ten people.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Passion for history and the ability to convey historical information in a lively and engaging manner.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, if needed.
  • Proficiency in computers, data management, and point of sale systems.
