About the position

The Town Planner is responsible for managing the Planning Department and its staff, assisting the Charlestown Planning Commission with land development and subdivision projects, and ensuring compliance with local and state regulations. This role involves reviewing applications, providing public information, and supporting comprehensive planning efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Administrative Officer for the Town of Charlestown.
  • Review all land development and subdivision applications for completeness and compliance with regulations.
  • Work with applicants and developers to meet town requirements.
  • Provide information to the public on local regulations and application statuses.
  • Support the Charlestown Planning Commission in land development and comprehensive planning.
  • Prepare documents for and attend Planning Commission meetings and workshops.
  • Chair the Charlestown Technical Review Committee.
  • Provide technical support to other boards and commissions as needed.
  • Maintain files associated with the Charlestown Comprehensive Plan.
  • Collaborate with various town departments on land use and development issues.
  • Stay updated on trends in municipal planning and state laws.
  • Prepare and comment on amendments to planning and zoning regulations.
  • Research and report on specified issues for decision-makers.
  • Prepare grant applications and oversee consultants as needed.
  • Oversee the Planning Department's functioning and budget.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in land use planning, urban planning, public administration, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of four years of work experience in municipal planning or equivalent education and experience.
  • Knowledge of subdivision and zoning laws, and comprehensive planning processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of planning programs and processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and GIS applications.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent public relations skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and accurate.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners is a plus.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.
