About the position

The Toxicology Chemist II position involves applying scientific principles and specialized instrumentation to analyze biological fluids and forensic specimens for the presence of drugs, metabolites, poisons, and other toxic substances. The role is critical in ensuring the integrity of evidence for medical examiners and law enforcement agencies, contributing to the determination of cause and manner of death and supporting criminal investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and evaluate approximately 25 complex, quantitative analytical procedures to determine the identity and concentration of drugs and toxins.
  • Review instrument function and analytical results for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Perform additional analytical tests as indicated by initial testing.
  • Maintain detailed records of all work to verify that work product meets scientific and legal requirements.
  • Develop and maintain quality control/quality assurance programs to document validity and quality of analytical results.
  • Assist in the development and validation of new analytical procedures.
  • Train new chemists and preserve the quality and integrity of evidence.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents and standards, and maintain an adequate level of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair specialized laboratory instrumentation.
  • Evaluate analytical assays and specific assay results for initial reporting.
  • Manage and prioritize a large volume of analyses in common bench space with common instrumentation.
  • Provide on-call emergency holiday and weekend analytical services as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of analytical laboratory experience.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair specialized laboratory instrumentation.
  • Degree-level knowledge of mathematics and chemistry.
  • Skilled in the use of standard laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of chemical and biological safe handling procedures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills for lay, legal, and technical audiences.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Working knowledge of computers.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and good driving record.

  • Experience with quality control/quality assurance programs.
  • Familiarity with forensic analysis procedures.
