About the position

The Illustrator and Art Designer position at the San Francisco Public Library involves performing complex graphic design and illustration work under general supervision. The role focuses on creating original digital and print graphics for various library promotional materials, reports, and signage, while also coordinating with stakeholders to meet their design needs. This is a temporary, part-time position requiring a minimum of 20 hours per week, with a commitment to advancing racial equity and inclusivity within the library's services and workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Create original digital and print graphics and illustration projects including reports, flyers, brochures, graphs, charts, ads, infographics, maps, signage, banners, event collateral, large format displays, announcements, and web and social media graphics.
  • Paint and draw illustrations for library promotional materials, reports, and signage.
  • Complete artistic hand lettering and embossing; arrange displays of photographs and drawings for publicity.
  • Produce desktop lettering and designs; design and execute exhibit panels for special projects.
  • Communicate and coordinate with stakeholders to discuss graphic and illustrator needs, develop concepts, and acquire approval of final designs.
  • Prepare and package final design files for printing or web use.
  • Prepare sketches, graphs, charts, posters, diagrams, final drawings, exhibits, and photographs from consultations or rough sketches.
  • Select print materials, coordinate print production, conduct press checks, and approve final prints for quality.
  • Capture and edit photographic images to incorporate into design layouts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years professional, journey-level experience in graphic design or commercial art, including experience using computer-based desktop publishing platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to prepare a wide variety of artistic media as well as sketches, lettering, painting, and drafting using computer technology or tools of the art.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
