About the position

The Maintenance Specialist III (Operations Ranger/Backup UPO) position at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is a vital role responsible for the maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment at the Lost Maples State Natural Area. Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs complex journey-level building maintenance and construction work. The specialist will be tasked with the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of park facilities, including buildings, restroom facilities, equipment, and park grounds. A significant aspect of this role involves preventative maintenance, which includes cleaning and inspecting various facilities to ensure they are in optimal condition for public use. In addition to maintenance duties, the Maintenance Specialist III will serve as the Back-Up Utility Plant Operator (UPO), assisting in the operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution System and Wastewater Treatment Systems. This includes ensuring regulatory compliance in all utility operations and completing required reports and laboratory testing as mandated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and TPWD. The role also requires the operation of various types of equipment, such as trucks, tractors, mowers, and power tools, and performing as the Additional Duty Safety Officer (ADSO). The position requires a proactive approach to enforcing park rules and regulations, performing resource management tasks, and interpreting the park's natural resources. The Maintenance Specialist III will work under general supervision, allowing for moderate latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Additional duties may be assigned as needed, and compliance with all agency, division, and branch rules, regulations, and procedures is mandatory.
