The Maintenance Specialist III (Operations Ranger) position at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is a full-time role focused on the maintenance and repair of facilities, buildings, equipment, and grounds at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Under the direction of the Assistant Park Superintendent and Lead Maintenance Specialist, the individual will perform complex building maintenance and construction work, ensuring that all park facilities meet public expectations and the needs of park visitors. This includes tasks such as cleaning and maintaining cabins, restrooms, and grounds, as well as assisting other staff in park maintenance functions. The role also involves following purchasing procedures for supplies and tools necessary for maintenance tasks. In addition to maintenance duties, the position requires acting as a wildland fire crew member, participating in all phases of prescribed fire implementation and wildfire response on designated sites. The Maintenance Specialist III will work under general supervision, exercising moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The job requires compliance with all agency, division, and branch rules, regulations, and procedures, and the individual may be assigned additional duties as needed. Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and have at least three years of experience in facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance. A valid State driver's license is required at the time of employment, and the candidate must obtain a National Wildland Fire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter, Type II (FFT2) certification within one year of employment. The position also has physical requirements, including the ability to pass the Wildland Fire Work Capacity Test at a moderate physical fitness level. The role is essential for maintaining the park's infrastructure and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
