About the position

The Trade Surveillance Analyst position at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) involves monitoring compliance risks and issues related to corporate banking, investment banking, and broker-dealer activities. The role requires collaboration with various departments to ensure adherence to regulatory standards and effective implementation of compliance policies. The analyst will be responsible for reviewing trade surveillance alerts, conducting investigations into market abuse and insider trading, and engaging with stakeholders to address potential risks.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the EQ surveillance manager within the CPAD Market Surveillance team.
  • Review and follow up on a variety of trade surveillance alerts and exception reports covering a range of risks and products.
  • Perform market abuse and insider trading investigations utilizing market data, trade data, e-comm, and voice records.
  • Interact with front office personnel to complete reviews as needed.
  • Engage relevant stakeholders to ensure a holistic response to detected risks.
  • Ensure issues arising from surveillance activities are escalated, remediated, and memorialized according to procedures.
  • Support surveillance KPI collection and distribution as required.
  • Create and/or maintain procedures as directed.
  • Stay abreast of current regulatory issues and rule changes.
  • Work with various groups, including Compliance Advisors, Front Office, Operations, IT, and Legal.
  • Work on ad hoc projects as necessary.
  • Support the refinement of surveillances and the creation/automation of tactical controls as required.
  • Contribute to strategic surveillance initiatives.
  • Proactively escalate issues to the Head of Market Surveillance as appropriate.

Requirements

  • 5+ years' experience in financial services, with specific emphasis in securities business preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex themes.
  • Strong attention to detail, with analytical and investigative skills.
  • High ethical standards, respect for confidentiality and privacy.
  • Knowledge of various regulatory agencies' rules and regulations, as well as market abuse typologies.
  • Familiarity with various trade surveillance tools and platforms, especially Bloomberg BTCA, TT, and Actimize.
  • Experience as a trader, trade surveillance professional, regulator, or in a 1LOD/2LOD role is a plus.
  • Proficiency with market data and due diligence vendors, such as Bloomberg, Reuters, Edgar, Worldcheck, etc.
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
