About the position

The Trades Specialist IV - Construction Shop Carpentry position at Clemson University involves performing a variety of carpentry and related duties that require both routine and advanced professional skills and technical knowledge. This role is essential for maintaining, remodeling, and repairing structures, ensuring that all carpentry work meets the highest standards of quality and safety. The specialist will also provide training and mentorship to less experienced employees, serving as a lead in the absence of the primary lead. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively with other trades to enhance overall project efficiency and safety. In this role, the specialist will be responsible for a range of carpentry maintenance tasks, including designing, building, installing, and repairing structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings, and cabinetry. The specialist will maintain the appearance and structural integrity of buildings, which includes working on doors, window trim, and various other structural components. The position also involves assisting in constructing walls, remodeling spaces, and hanging and finishing drywall. The specialist will be expected to install and repair various structures, ensuring that all work aligns with the specifications outlined in plans and blueprints. Additionally, the specialist will engage in general maintenance duties, which may include creating access points in ceilings, walls, and floors, as well as erecting safe scaffolding to facilitate work at heights. Safety is a critical component of this role, and the specialist will be responsible for promoting safe workplace practices and complying with all relevant OSHA safety mandates, as well as University policies regarding lockout/tagout (LOTO) and personal protective equipment (PPE). Finally, the specialist will take on a mentorship role, leading and guiding less experienced team members in applicable procedures and techniques, while also ensuring compliance with industry standards and University regulations. This position is vital for maintaining the operational integrity of the University’s facilities and ensuring a safe and productive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, builds, installs and repairs structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings, and cabinetry.
  • Maintains building appearance and structural integrity, including doors and window trim.
  • Assists in constructing walls, remodeling, and hanging and finishing drywall.
  • Installs and repairs all types of structures and performs related tasks involving interior and exterior finish of carpentry work.
  • Installs structural components of buildings such as joists, braces, wood and metal studs, posts, columns, and trusses.
  • Installs and repairs ceilings, siding, wood and metal doors, and windows.
  • Installs and repairs walls and floors.
  • Constructs and sets forms.
  • Fabricates, installs, and repairs interior components such as shelving, benches, lab tables, cabinets, and partitions.
  • Fabricates, refits, and installs doors, locks, and trim.
  • Reads and comprehends plans and blueprints.
  • Recognizes and selects appropriate lumber types and grades.
  • Makes rough sketches and estimates cost, time, and materials of carpentry projects.
  • Works with customers to provide them with a better product.
  • Works with other trades to help them perform their jobs more easily and safely.
  • Creates accesses in ceilings, walls, and floors.
  • Installs catwalks in ceilings, attics, and over objects.
  • Erects safe scaffolding to minimize use of tall ladders.
  • Promotes a safe workplace and safe work practices.
  • Complies with all applicable OSHA safety mandates and enforcement of University LOTO & PPE policy.
  • Complies with all EPA/DHEC rules.
  • Promotes positive and productive relationships within and between shops.
  • Leads, guides, and/or trains others in applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Completes the required training and testing to maintain applicable licensing and compliance for industry and University.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in carpentry and construction work.
  • Strong technical knowledge of carpentry techniques and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and plans.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and practices.
  • Familiarity with various carpentry tools and equipment.
