About the position

The Traditional Agro-Ecology Research Specialist position at the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii involves conducting research in traditional agro-ecology, focusing on spatial modeling, data collection, and collaboration with various stakeholders. The role requires a PhD in a relevant field and entails leading analyses, field verification, and dissemination of research results while working closely with local communities and resource management partners.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for spatial modeling, site validation, data collection and curation.
  • Interface with Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) teams and Native Hawaiian community advisors for deliverable development.
  • Work with NRCS local soil survey office and National Ecological Site Team to identify key locations and ecological sites for research.
  • Lead analyses, conceptual development, training, and dissemination of results throughout the project.
  • Identify field verification work and select field sites.
  • Obtain access permissions for all field-related activities.
  • Communicate promptly regarding administrative or operational issues related to responsibilities.
  • Compile information for semi-annual performance reports and writing tasks for broader impacts.
  • Drive as needed to support project work.

Requirements

  • PhD from an accredited college or university in soil science, agro-ecology, environmental studies, geography, sustainable biology, or related field.
  • 1-3 years of research experience in traditional agro-ecology, tropical soil science, or related ecological field.
  • Experience with the Ecosystem Dynamics Interpretive Tool (EDIT) framework.
  • Experience collaborating with local and national partners in resource management or ecological research.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five years of experience designing, implementing, monitoring, and documenting traditional Hawaiian agro-ecological research.
  • Experience working with traditional agro-ecological knowledge and developing detailed work plans for research implementation.
  • Experience applying traditional knowledge to spatial ecological research.
  • Successful experience with drafting manuscripts and the peer-review publication process related to agro-ecological research.
