About the position

The Traffic Control Officer (TCO) position is a part-time, per diem role within the Police Department of Easthampton, focused on enhancing traffic control efforts. TCOs are civilian, non-sworn employees responsible for directing traffic, ensuring pedestrian safety, and reporting traffic safety conditions. They operate under the supervision of sworn police officers and are not authorized to carry firearms or make arrests.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and expedite the flow of traffic at assigned intersections.
  • Prevent collisions and protect pedestrians while ensuring the free flow of traffic.
  • Report traffic safety conditions that may endanger or inconvenience the public to Dispatch.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Pass an interview process, background check, medical exam, and drug screening.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator license is necessary.
  • CPR Certification is required.
  • Prior police officer experience preferred or successful completion of Traffic Control Safety Course.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with traffic control or prior law enforcement experience is preferred.
  • Completion of the MA Approved Flagger Certification Program or MPTC Traffic Control class.
