About the position

The Traffic Engineer is responsible for overseeing the City's traffic operations, including the development and management of transportation plans, traffic oversight, and project management. This role serves as the primary contact for traffic-related issues, engaging with citizens and neighborhoods, and requires strong public relations skills. The position involves independent work within professional guidelines and regular interaction with various stakeholders, including presentations at public meetings.

Responsibilities

• Develop short and long-term transportation plans to address the City's needs.
• Serve in an advisory capacity on traffic matters, including signs, signals, and lighting.
• Prepare and supervise interlocal agreements and engineering contracts.
• Provide training and policy guidance to engineers and design professionals.
• Monitor construction contractor activities to ensure project quality and adherence to budget.
• Review traffic engineering plans for compliance with laws and specifications.
• Attend public meetings and respond to citizen inquiries regarding traffic issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Minimum of four years' experience in project management, engineering design, or traffic impact studies.
• Traffic engineering experience is required.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer in Kansas or ability to obtain within one year.
