About the position

The Hanover Community Services Board is seeking a part-time Training Specialist for the RAFT House program, primarily responsible for providing transportation and related services. This position operates on a split shift from Monday to Friday, allowing for a flexible work schedule while engaging with a diverse group of individuals. The RAFT House program is a progressive psychiatric rehabilitation initiative that emphasizes recovery, acceptance, friendship, and teamwork, creating a supportive environment for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses. In this role, the Training Specialist will work independently while also interacting with clients, their families, staff, and community members. The ideal candidate should possess a good driving record, basic computer skills for email and data entry, and strong communication abilities. Effective time management skills are essential, as is the ability to maintain confidentiality and establish positive working relationships. The position requires the completion of necessary paperwork and reports, as well as adherence to the rights of individuals served, ensuring their privacy, dignity, and respect. The Training Specialist will be part of Hanover County's Career Development Program, which includes a structured career ladder from Training Specialist I to Senior Training Specialist. This position reports to a Training Specialist Supervisor and does not involve supervising other staff members. The essential functions of the role include facilitating individual choice regarding services, providing transportation for individuals with disabilities, and maintaining vehicle cleanliness and safety. The working conditions involve routine exposure to various environmental factors, and the role may require physical assistance with individuals served, including lifting up to 100 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transportation for individuals with disabilities attending rehabilitation or supported employment programs.
  • Assist passengers in getting on and off the van as needed.
  • Maintain order while transporting passengers and monitor interactions, intervening as necessary.
  • Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections, including checking fluid levels, tire wear and pressure, and lights.
  • Follow emergency procedures in the event of an accident or breakdown.
  • Maintain mileage, trip logs, and other related records.
  • Ensure cleanliness of vehicles by vacuuming and cleaning windows.
  • Complete paperwork and file reports as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience working in transportation and with individuals with disabilities preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with clients, families, staff, and community members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in psychiatric rehabilitation programs.
  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities and mental health services.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
