About the position

The Training and Technical Assistance Manager is responsible for providing educational opportunities for incubator farmers focused on sustainable and ecologically conscious production methodologies. This role involves coordinating training programs, facilitating knowledge-sharing among farmers, and managing relationships with partner organizations to support the implementation of climate-smart techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of hands-on farmer training and technical assistance programs covering topics such as seed selection, planting, pest management, irrigation, record keeping, harvesting, soil health, and food safety.
  • Align training topics through the collection and analysis of farmer interest and goals, including individual farmer plans.
  • Develop and implement strategies for evaluating the effectiveness of training and technical assistance activities.
  • Manage the collection and analysis of data related to farming activities, including crop selection, pesticide application, yields, and resource usage.
  • Facilitate and support program participants in securing funding and assistance from government programs, including application preparation and submission.
  • Collaborate with the farm manager and program director on the climate-smart demonstration site development.
  • Implement an organic pest management system with growers.
  • Provide weekly harvest support at farms as needed.
  • Conduct outreach to socially disadvantaged farmers about climate-smart farming and recruit participants for learning opportunities.
  • Coordinate schedules for education opportunities among interested farmers.
  • Support farmers' applications to present at and attend conferences, coordinating logistics and reimbursement requests.
  • Provide cross-functional training to other staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Document program activities and provide data for program evaluation and reporting.
  • Participate in regular project meetings and other events as scheduled.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in sustainable agriculture or farm management in the northeast U.S.
  • Experience providing training to adult participants, including curriculum development and post-training assessment.
  • Experience in community building and training multicultural groups, including those with limited literacy or English comprehension.
  • Ability to safely operate farm equipment and perform manual labor.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in oral and non-verbal communication.
  • Confidence with installing and repairing farm infrastructure such as hoop houses and irrigation systems.
  • Exceptional time management and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect data and maintain accurate records.
  • Commitment to food and land justice, sustainable agriculture, and community development.

  • Experience with NRCS or other USDA programs.
