About the position

Pasadena City College is seeking a Full-time, tenure-track Transfer/Honors Counselor to begin in the 2024-2025 academic year. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment that positively engages our diverse student population. Faculty at Pasadena City College are expected to actively participate in college-wide governance and the decision-making process, contributing to the overall success of the institution. As a Transfer/Honors Counselor, the incumbent will provide academic, career, and personal counseling to a diverse student population, particularly in the General Transfer and Honors Services area. Responsibilities include leading workshops, orientations, and application labs, presenting student success workshops, providing educational planning services, conducting transcript evaluations, and offering interventions for probationary and disqualified students. The counselor will also focus on the recruitment, retention, and transfer of low-income, first-generation Latinx and Black African American students, supporting initiatives that enhance their academic success.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to a diverse student population in the General Transfer and Honors Services area.
  • Lead transfer and honors workshops, orientations, and application labs.
  • Present student success workshops and provide educational planning services for new and continuing students.
  • Conduct transcript evaluations for students with credits from other institutions.
  • Provide interventions for probationary and disqualified students.
  • Recruit, retain, and support low-income, first-generation Latinx and Black African American students.
  • Support students in the Black Honors program.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities that facilitate growth in institutional practices for diverse student outcomes.
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum and assess student learning outcomes.
  • Undertake divisional and professional responsibilities as a regular faculty member and participate in college governance activities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and understanding of culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques.
  • Ability to adapt pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities.
  • Knowledge of current practices in distance education, including learning management systems such as Canvas.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire to work collaboratively with colleagues and students.

Nice-to-haves

  • A minimum of five years of community college counseling experience, including knowledge of articulation policies and transfer agreements.
  • Recent experience counseling African American, Latina/o/x, Native American, and other underserved students in an academic setting.
  • Experience with successful practices for students with physical and/or learning disabilities.
