The Transit Coach Operator (TCO) serves as a frontline representative of the University of Michigan Transit System, responsible for operating large transit coaches in dynamic environments, ensuring safe and efficient transportation services to the university community. The role emphasizes customer service, safety, and adherence to transit schedules while maintaining a supportive work environment.

  • Safely operate large transit coaches to provide transportation to all riders.
  • Maintain transit schedules when possible.
  • Provide courteous, friendly, and professional assistance to transit riders and the general public.
  • Maintain adequate knowledge of the transit system, including service changes.
  • Complete any required paperwork, reports, and training as required.
  • Maintain all required passenger and vehicle records.
  • Strive to create and maintain a supportive, inclusive work environment.
  • Assist all passengers in accordance with departmental policy and ADA guidelines.
  • Maintain a safety-minded attitude at all times.
  • Report safety, service, security, or maintenance observations to supervision as appropriate.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License (Group B or higher, with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements).
  • Must have an acceptable and appropriate driving record; no patterns of unsafe behaviors or safety violations; no major safety violations.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Certificate; candidates will be required to pass a DOT Medical Exam prior to hire.
  • Demonstrated responsible work experience of at least one (1) year dealing directly with the public.
  • Previous experience driving commercial vehicles required; transit coach experience preferred.
  • Ability to adhere to all University/Departmental policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations that apply to the position.
  • Knowledge of the Ann Arbor campus environment and map interpretation skills.
  • Ability to perform simple math.
