About the position

The Transit Director of Safety & Security is responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe and secure environment for employees, customers, and the public within Broward County Transportation. Reporting directly to the Chief Safety and Security Officer (CSSO), this role involves developing, overseeing, and directing safety and security policies and procedures, conducting risk assessments, and implementing necessary remedies. The Director will also track key performance indicators (KPIs), analyze trends, and formulate strategies for improvement, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the CSSO in developing and implementing safety and security programs.
  • Coordinate with all BCT sections to ensure safety and security measures are accessible and employees are trained.
  • Ensure compliance with transit agency requirements and local, state, federal laws.
  • Conduct regular unannounced inspections to audit safety and security compliance and provide feedback.
  • Provide training to BCT staff related to safety and security as requested by the CSSO.
  • Respond to employee and customer concerns related to safety and security.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with governmental agencies and safety committees.
  • Assist in managing the annual budget for the Safety and Security Division.
  • Procure safety and security equipment as requested by the CSSO.
  • Assess contracts for accuracy and needs of BCT, ensuring timely renewals.
  • Promote a culture of safety throughout the organization.
  • Develop KPIs for safety and security, keeping accurate records and providing analysis of trends.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays, and respond to emergency calls.
  • Represent BCT at meetings, seminars, or conferences to stay updated on legislative changes and technologies.
  • Generate community outreach related to security topics.
  • Supervise staff, delegate workload, and ensure training and performance management is provided.
  • Assist in the recruitment process for vacant positions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, public administration, or a closely related field.
  • Four years of high-level experience related to safety and security, including four years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's/Graduate Degree in Criminal Justice, Business, Public Administration, Security Studies, Emergency Management or Related Discipline.
  • 10+ years of Safety & Security Experience.
  • 10+ years of experience with FTA Safety & Security Programs.
