About the position

The Transmission Civil Estimating Engineer/Designer position is a critical role within the Technical Shared Services team at Southern Company, specifically supporting Alabama Power Company's (APC) substation civil-site development. This position is based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL, and offers a hybrid work schedule that includes both in-office and telecommuting options. The selected candidate will be expected to travel approximately 50% of the time, primarily for day trips within Alabama, with occasional overnight travel for site visits. The role requires a strong commitment to safety and ethical work practices, ensuring that all projects are scoped accurately and efficiently. In this position, the engineer/designer will be responsible for providing comprehensive scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services that support APC's transmission capital projects. This includes developing detailed conceptual design packages that serve as the foundation for accurate cost estimates and project schedules. The successful candidate will also participate in various Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives, and may serve as a damage assessment team member following major storms, after receiving the necessary training. Regular site visits will be required to assess proposed substation locations and existing substations that may need modifications. The ideal candidate will possess a BS Degree in Engineering, preferably Civil, and have relevant experience in civil site development and transmission civil design. A Professional Engineering (PE) license is a plus. The role demands strong leadership skills, the ability to foster relationships across different departments, and effective communication skills to manage projects with competing deadlines. Knowledge of various engineering tools and software, such as TEAMS, Vault, and AutoCAD, is also essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe and ethical work environment through total personal commitment to safety excellence.
  • Provide civil engineering expertise to accurately scope projects and provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion.
  • Develop detailed conceptual design packages used to produce accurate cost estimates and project schedules as the basis for detailed design activities.
  • Participate in, support, and lead as appropriate, Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives.
  • Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms after receiving the company-provided training.
  • Attend site visits throughout Alabama and Mississippi to review proposed substation locations, potential interconnections, and existing substations requiring potential footprint modifications.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Engineering (Civil preferred) or applicable degree and experience.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is a plus.
  • Experience with Civil Site Development required.
  • Experience in Transmission Civil Design preferred.
  • Experience working with Operating Company personnel is a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership on projects involving multiple work groups and departments.
  • Ability to successfully implement and lead safe work behaviors in the workplace.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain peer and customer relationships across organizational lines.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and achieve results through effective use of persuasive communication and formal presentation skills.
  • Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to satisfactorily complete performance management and to lead effectively in a team environment.
  • Time management skills sufficient to help manage projects of the team with various priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated risk-assessment skills for use in guiding decisions on design alternatives.
  • Proven problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of TEAMS, Vault, TSmart, Transview, OneNote, TrueView / Autocad, and FEMA Flood Map Information.
