About the position

The Transmission Design Electric Engineer at CenterPoint Energy is responsible for the design and analysis of the transmission system, ensuring reliability and material adequacy while supporting various projects including transmission, substation, telecommunication, and distribution. This role involves evaluating material performance, coordinating research and development projects, and interfacing with various stakeholders to enhance the electric system.

Responsibilities

  • Design transmission facilities and prepare project cost estimates.
  • Conduct PLS-CADD modeling and prepare SAP work orders for capital projects.
  • Evaluate material performance considering environmental factors and construction methods.
  • Coordinate material testing and failure analysis.
  • Recommend and coordinate research and development projects, including preparing RFPs and evaluating contractor bids.
  • Perform field inspections related to engineering support requests, utilizing various modes of transportation.
  • Interface with inspectors, engineers, construction personnel, and management regarding transmission inspection and reliability.
  • Evaluate new technologies to enhance the electric system.
  • Support the preparation of yearly Capital budgets.
  • Represent the department on task forces and committees, serving as a subject matter expert.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas or active pursuit of a Texas P.E. license.
  • Minimum of two years of electric utility engineering experience, including engineering calculations and design.
  • Master of Science degree in Engineering may substitute for up to one year of experience.
  • Ph.D. in Engineering may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with PLS-CADD software.
  • Familiarity with SAP work order systems.
  • Knowledge of environmental considerations in material performance.
