Project Description: * Work with the Engineering staff to support the Transmission Control Center. * Real Time Planning(RTP) supports the operation of the transmission grid by doing tasks that support the tools, programs, and databases used to perform various operational tasks such as outage coordination, powerflow studies, power system monitoring, and finding solutions to issues in real time out to two years in the future. * RTP works with most groups in the transmission business unit so this position provides insight to many career opportunities at Xcel Energy. * The intern will work as an entry level engineer supporting the team. * Through practical experience and mentoring, successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence in simple power flow studies for planned transmission outages, transmission line loading reviews, and restoration planning. * This will be a summer opportunity with the potential to extend into a school semester.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Engineering staff in the Transmission Control Center.
  • Assist in Real Time Planning (RTP) for the operation of the transmission grid.
  • Perform outage coordination and powerflow studies.
  • Monitor power systems and find solutions to issues in real time.
  • Gain experience in transmission line loading reviews and restoration planning.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited Electrical or Power Systems Engineering program.
  • Current Sophomore or above.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally.
  • Self-motivated with good mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Must be within commuting distance of work location year-round.
  • Able to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer.
  • Able to commit to the internship for a year or longer.
  • Willingness to work in field and in office.

  • Experience with Microsoft Applications.
