About the position

WSP is seeking a Transmission Line Design Engineer to join their Energy Team in Charlotte, NC, with consideration for other locations. The role involves providing engineering consulting services for transmission line design, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with various stakeholders to deliver high-quality projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transmission line design and engineering consulting services to major power and energy utility clients.
  • Design electrical transmission facilities including line layout, foundations, structure configuration, and insulation specifications.
  • Prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
  • Deliver accurate substation dead ends and transmission line designs that meet industry standards and good engineering practices.
  • Review internal and external designs for code compliance and constructability.
  • Resolve site queries and perform site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
  • Maintain complete project documentation related to transmission line design and construction.
  • Coordinate design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
  • Maintain good working relationships with internal groups, material suppliers, and contractors.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data relating to transmission line components and equipment specifications.
  • Support project teams with research and recommendations on design requirements and field equipment applications.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering and construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations for conductor sizing, EMF reports, and foundation design.
  • Prepare data visualizations and technical reports for project presentations.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to address design and construction issues.
  • Collaborate with other engineers on projects with electrical infrastructure authorities.
  • Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • A degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • 5-7 years of relevant post-education experience in electrical engineering, specifically in transmission line design.
  • Relevant experience in transmission line design and knowledge of PLSCadd.
  • Engineer in Training Certification or eligibility for PE licensing preferred.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, and design/build applications.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, and compliance practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing and office automation software.
  • Proficiency with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge effectively.
