About the position

The Transmission Line Design Engineer at WSP USA will be responsible for providing engineering consulting services related to the design of electrical transmission facilities. This role involves working with major power and energy utility clients, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and maintaining project documentation throughout the design and construction phases. The engineer will collaborate with multi-disciplined project teams and contribute to the development of technical reports and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transmission line design and engineering consulting services to major power and energy utility clients.
  • Design electrical transmission facilities including line layout, foundations, structure configuration, and conductor specification.
  • Prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
  • Deliver accurate substation dead ends and transmission line designs that meet industry standards.
  • Review internal and external designs for code compliance and constructability.
  • Resolve site queries and perform site inspections during construction phases.
  • Maintain complete project documentation for transmission line design and construction.
  • Coordinate design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
  • Maintain good working relationships with internal groups, material suppliers, and contractors.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data relating to transmission line components and equipment specifications.
  • Support project teams with research and recommendations on design requirements and field equipment applications.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering and construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations for conductor sizing and foundation design as needed.
  • Prepare data visualizations and technical reports for presentation of findings.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys for design and construction problems.
  • Collaborate with other engineers on projects with electrical infrastructure authorities.
  • Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.

Requirements

  • A degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • 5-7 years of relevant post-education experience in electrical engineering designing transmission lines.
  • Relevant experience in transmission line design and knowledge of PLSCadd.
  • Engineer in Training Certification or eligibility for PE licensing preferred.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices related to permitting and project work.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, and compliance practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing and office automation software.
  • Proficiency with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD).
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge effectively.
