About the position

The Transportation Assistant (Personal Property/OA) position within the Department of the Air Force is primarily responsible for providing information and advice to military and civilian personnel regarding their entitlements for the shipment and storage of personal property. This includes household goods, unaccompanied baggage, privately owned vehicles, and special items such as mobile homes and large boxes. The role is crucial in ensuring that personnel understand their rights and responsibilities concerning the movement of their personal belongings, both domestically and overseas. In this position, the Transportation Assistant will prepare and process applications for the transportation or storage of a wide range of personal property and privately owned vehicles. This includes planning and processing Do It Yourself (DITY) incentive moves for payment through the local Finance office. The assistant will utilize word processing software and printing equipment to create, copy, edit, and print various standardized documents. Additionally, the role involves performing clerical and administrative tasks in support of transportation operations, which may include preparing requests to recover excess costs, drafting instructions on office procedures, and generating routine correspondence. The position requires a thorough understanding of transportation rules, procedures, and operations governing entitlements and documentation requirements for shipments. The assistant must be able to analyze and evaluate transportation data for input into automated systems and respond effectively to inquiries from various stakeholders regarding the shipment and storage of personal property. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for success in this role, as is the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel authorized military and civilian employees on their entitlements for shipment and storage of personal property and privately owned vehicles.
  • Prepare and process applications for transportation or storage of personal property and vehicles.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be registered for Selective Service (if applicable).
  • Ability to type a minimum of 40 words per minute.
  • At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent, including knowledge of transportation rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of automated transportation systems and basic office automation functions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with military or federal transportation processes.
  • Familiarity with DoD Priority Placement Program and related policies.
