About the position

The Transportation Craftsperson at Tulsa Public Schools is responsible for the repair and maintenance of a diverse fleet of vehicles, including diesel, gasoline, and alternative fueled trucks and school buses. This role is crucial in ensuring that all district vehicles are safe, reliable, and ready for use, thereby supporting the mission of the school district to provide quality education and services to the community. The Transportation Craftsperson will work closely with other maintenance staff and will be expected to follow safety protocols and guidelines while performing repairs and maintenance tasks. In this position, the individual will utilize their technical skills to diagnose issues, perform repairs, and conduct routine maintenance on various types of vehicles. This includes working with advanced diagnostic tools and equipment to ensure that all vehicles meet state and federal safety standards. The role may also involve welding and fabrication tasks as needed, requiring a solid understanding of vehicle mechanics and repair techniques. The Transportation Craftsperson will be expected to maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed, as well as to communicate effectively with supervisors and other team members regarding vehicle status and repair needs. This position plays a vital role in supporting the overall operations of the school district by ensuring that transportation services are efficient and effective, ultimately contributing to the success of students and staff alike.

Responsibilities

  • Repair diesel, gasoline, and alternative fueled trucks and school buses.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on district vehicles to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools to identify and troubleshoot vehicle issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance staff to ensure efficient operations.
  • Follow safety protocols and guidelines during all repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Experience with International, Cummins, and Mercedes diesels preferred.
  • Welding experience preferred.
  • DOT physical certification required.
  • State of Oklahoma School Bus Driving Certificate required.
  • Advanced knowledge in diverse fleet maintenance and repair is necessary.
  • Must be willing to obtain Class A CDL.
  • Must be willing to acquire a Class 'B' CDL with Passenger, Air brake, and School bus endorsements.
  • Must be willing to acquire and maintain ASE Master School Bus Technician Certificate and other ASE certifications as required.
  • Must be willing to acquire and maintain a State of Oklahoma Alternative Fuels Certificate within one year of date of hire.
