About the position

The Transportation Director is responsible for the overall management of the Transportation Department, ensuring that all activities and operations are directed, coordinated, and organized effectively through the utilization of department staff. This role involves supervising and overseeing vehicle operations, ensuring the safety of all vehicles, and maintaining comprehensive maintenance records for the transportation fleet. The Transportation Director directly supervises all staff within the department and coordinates vehicle inspection, maintenance, safety, and repair programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as general transportation operation practices. In this position, the director employs intentional leadership strategies to develop and maximize the talents of department personnel, fostering a culture where individuals feel well-informed, connected, and valued. The director is responsible for providing recommendations and solutions for continuous improvements in trip services, scheduling, and routing. Performance reviews for transportation staff are conducted, with recommendations made for hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations as necessary. The director also reviews and evaluates drivers to ensure quality customer service and safe performance, addressing any safety concerns that arise. Training for transportation drivers is a key responsibility, with the director planning, developing, implementing, and delivering comprehensive driver training and safety programs. This includes new employee assessments, training, and orientation. The director serves as a model for staff accountability to the agency's core values and actively participates in staff meetings and other training sessions. The Transportation Director ensures that all transportation programs meet federal, state, local, contract, and grant requirements, as well as agency standards. Responsibilities also include preparing program budgets, long-range planning, and coordinating public relations and communication activities related to transportation programs. The director supervises staffing activities, designs and implements departmental program plans, and monitors adherence to policies and standard operating procedures. Regular reviews of safety practices and loss reports are conducted, with policies and procedures implemented to address any issues. The director represents the Transportation Department at public and governmental meetings as directed, ensuring that the department's interests are well-represented.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall operations of the Transportation Department.
  • Supervise and oversee vehicle operations and maintain maintenance records.
  • Directly supervise all Transportation Department staff.
  • Coordinate vehicle inspection, maintenance, safety, and repair programs.
  • Employ leadership strategies to develop and maximize staff talents.
  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvements in trip services, scheduling, and routing.
  • Conduct performance reviews for Transportation staff and make hiring/disciplinary recommendations.
  • Ensure driver compliance with vehicle safety checks and address safety concerns.
  • Schedule and coordinate training for transportation drivers.
  • Plan and implement driver training and safety programs.
  • Ensure Transportation programs meet all regulatory requirements and agency standards.
  • Prepare program budgets and long-range planning for transportation programs.
  • Coordinate public relations and communication activities for transportation programs.
  • Supervise staffing activities and provide direct supervision to Transportation staff.
  • Design and implement departmental program plans and strategies.
  • Monitor adherence to policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare complex reports on activities, expenditures, and compliance.
  • Prepare federal and state grant applications.
  • Disseminate information to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Review safety practices and implement corrective policies as needed.
  • Represent the Transportation Department at public and governmental meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university or 2 years of experience in transportation administration or a similar field in lieu of education.
  • Two years of experience in the administration/management of a transportation program/system or related field.
  • Valid Florida driver's license.
