About the position

The Transportation Engineer position at the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is responsible for providing technical expertise in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation systems within the state. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with the department's standards. The Transportation Engineer also serves as a mentor to junior staff and plays a key role in implementing innovative technologies and best practices in transportation engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in applicable discipline specific project activities
  • Coordinate with the Project Manager and Project Team regarding potential impacts to the scope, schedule, and/or budget
  • Perform applicable discipline specific activities as outlined in the Project Delivery Network (PDN)
  • Assist with multidisciplinary reviews for projects as part of the Quality Assurance process
  • Design, implement, and operate Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) strategies including the application of emerging technologies
  • Participate in Risk Management Assessments and implement risk mitigation strategies
  • Identify conflicts in proposed designs, make recommendations, and coordinate proactive solutions with other disciplines
  • Participate in the scope development, selection, and administration of consultant contracts on all phases of the project
  • Attend and represent the department in public meetings, addressing customer needs and concerns
  • Serve as a mentor in supporting career development and cultivating communication and leadership skills of others at TDOT

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution
  • Active status with the State of Tennessee as a professional engineer
  • 4 years of demonstrated competency in developing and/or constructing transportation projects

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O)
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations for transportation projects
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills
