About the position

The Transportation Engineer 1 - Design position at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) involves working under the supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer to gain comprehensive experience in various engineering functions. The role includes participating in a work-based training program that rotates through different work units such as Construction, Highway Management, and Planning & Engineering, with the goal of facilitating operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with project specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Work under a Registered Professional Engineer to accomplish assignments.
  • Participate in a work-based training program for approximately 12 months.
  • Rotate through projects/assignments in Construction, Highway Management, and Planning & Engineering.
  • Inspect existing projects to ensure contractor compliance with plans and guidelines.
  • Maintain project records using computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Conduct traffic studies and research specific locations for safety improvements.
  • Assist in planning improvement and reconstruction projects for public roads.
  • Draft detailed construction drawings and perform specific portions of broad assignments using software like MicroStation.
  • Review highway and bridge plans for technical and legal accuracy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Accepted for Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Flexibility in work assignments and tasks.
  • Problem-solving skills.
